The reigning swimming world champion and a 2008 Olympic silver medalist in the 100-meter breaststroke died Monday of an apparent heart attack after a practice session in Arizona.
One of Norway’s top medal hopes for the London Olympics, Alexander Dale Oen was attending a training camp in Flagstaff with the Norwegian team when he collapsed in his bathroom and could not be resuscitated. He was 26.
Dale Oen had dedicated his gold medal at the 2011 world championships in Shanghai to the victims of the massacre in Norway, which three days earlier had killed 77 people.
Dale Oen’s teammates found him after he took an unsually long time in the shower. He had completed a light pool workout earlier Monday.
