Ja Rule to jail; Adele leads Mercury Prize nominees; Beauty Pill begins experiment

- Rapper Ja Rule was sentenced to 28 months in jail for failing to pay taxes on a portion of his earnings from 2004 through 2008. He also has to serve a separate two-year sentence on weapons charges, but will be able to serve them concurrently, so at least there’s that.

- You’ll never believe it, but Adele leads the Mercury prize short­list for the best British album of the year. Other nominees for the prestigious award include PJ Harvey, James Blake, Katy B and Tinie Tempah.

- Last month we told you about local band Beauty Pill’s ambitious new project of recording an album in public at Artisphere. The group kicked off its two-week residency in Arlington over the weekend at the City Paper has some observations.

- Matthew Sweet will perform his fan-favorite album 1991 album “Girlfriend” on a fall tour.
