A District man was convicted Tuesday in Virginia federal court for using fraudulent prescriptions to get Oxycontin pills, then selling them at a large profit to drug dealers.
Arthur Bernard Taper, 46, was caught in part of a wide-ranging law enforcement effort called Operation "Cotton Candy," which has ended in more than 200 convictions of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, patients and drug dealers in connection with the distribution and use of pain pills.
Taper faces a maximum penalty of 20 years when he is sentenced on Feb. 11, 2011, according to Neil H. MacBride, US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and James W. McJunkin, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI's Washington Field Office.
Taper was charged with conspiring to distribute oxycodone for two years starting in April 2008. He would get the pills from pharmacies in the District and Alexandria, officials said.
