Commentator S.E. Cupp on MSNBC slaps back arguments — advanced yesterday by women lawmakers — that perhaps more females in the Secret Service would have prevented the Cartagena prostitution mess. In inveighing against that suggestion, Cupp said:
I don’t want — when it comes to the national security of our president, I don’t want equality, okay. I don’t want this quota mongering. I want the best people for the job protecting the president.. . . If that happens to be all men, that’s fine.
Cupp’s reference to “quota mongering” here amounts to an attempt to discredit the more-females-in-the-Secret-Service argument as a lefty affirmative action program for presidential security. But actually it’s a merit argument — more women make for more protection. Apparently that argument short-circuits Cupp.
