A Siberian tiger cub feeds at a private zoo in Abony, east of Budapest. Three female Siberian cubs were born near Hamburg, Germany, but came to Hungary soon after, when their mother became ill and could not feed them anymore. They are 8 weeks old and growing fast, fed on goats' milk and tiger food.

The National Zoo in Washington has two new additions: 1-month-old cheetah cubs. The cats are being raised by human hands after a risky birth last month at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Virginia.

A biologist holds a Mediterranean turtle before releasing it in the Llevant natural park, near Arta on the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca. Mediterranean turtles are listed as a protected species as a result of development pressure on their natural habitat. Because of local government protection plans, their population is growing and about 4,330 turtles were released during the past three decades, according to the Consortium for the Recovery of Fauna of the Balearic Islands.

DNA testing has verified the parentage. There hasn’t been a white Standardbred born in North America in 14 years; that one, named Historicallyunique, was born in Ontario.

A white heron and other birds nest in the branches of a tree at the protected natural area of La Barra in the city of Metapan, about 75 miles north of San Salvador. Dozens of birds have been found dead in the past few weeks in the government-protected area of La Barra, a nesting refuge for the white heron and other wild birds, according to members of the Salvadoran Association of Bird Rescue (ALAS). The members of the nongovernmental organization are researching whether pesticide use in the cornfields near the nature preserve is causing the unusually high mortality of herons and their chicks as well as other birds in the area.

Police said they had seized the carcasses after being shot at by smugglers who were transporting the dead animals to Hanoi. There are fewer than 50 tigers living wild in remote forests across Vietnam and the population is in danger of being wiped out by hunters and traffickers.
