Demonstrators kick the steel-covered facade of a bank in Buenos Aires, demanding the return of their deposits in dollars, not pesos, in this file photo. Argentina had just defaulted on more than $100 billion in foreign debt, banks were shuttered, the economy was in ruins and streets were filled with protesters. After President Fernando de la Rua in December 2001, four presidents followed in a rapid succession over 10 days. A decade later, Argentina's government is celebrating the Aug. 3 payoff of ten-year bonds given to people whose savings were confiscated during this crisis.

A dock extends into a dry cove where grass has begun to grow at Morse Reservoir in Noblesville, Ind. The reservoir is six feet below normal levels. More than half of U.S. counties are now classified by the federal government as natural disaster areas, mostly because of drought. The Agriculture Department on Wednesday added 218 more counties to the classification. That brings this year's total to 1,584 in 32 states — more than 90 percent of them because of the drought.

Long lines and traffic jams were reported throughout the American heartland after 630,000 people declared on Facebook they would take part in Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.

Customers eat at a Chick-fil-A in Springfield, Va., during Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day, which was organized by a Facebook group of the same name. The fast-food chain sparked a national controversy after its president, Dan Cathy, said his company opposes same-sex marriage. The Facebook group organized the day in response to calls for a boycott of the chain, stating on its group page for participants to “affirm appreciation for a company run by Christian principles by showing up on Wednesday.” A back-up of cars can been seen waiting for the drive-through in the glass reflection of the window. One driver said he had waited in line for more than an hour in order to place his order at the drive-through.

Xuerui Li of China returns a shot against Pui Yin Yip of Hong Kong in their women's singles badminton quarterfinal at Wembley Arena during the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Li won in two games, advancing to the semifinals. The sport has incited a flurry of controversy after eight doubles players — two teams from South Korea, one from China and one from Indonesia — were disqualified for allegedly throwing matches in an attempt to receive more favorable placement in the quarterfinals, to which they had all already qualified. One of the Chinese players, Yu Yang, announced Wednesday that she was quitting the sport. “Farewell Badminton World Federation,” she wrote on her microblog. “Farewell my dear badminton.”
