New York City police officers stand in front of a midtown Manhattan movie theater as people arrive for a screening of "The Dark Knight Rises.” A gunman in a gas mask barged into a crowded Colorado theater during a midnight premiere of the Batman movie on Friday, hurled a gas canister and then opened fire, killing 12 people and injuring at least 50 others in one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent U.S. history. NYPD commissioner Ray Kelly said the department was providing the extra security at theaters "as a precaution against copycats and to raise the comfort levels among movie patrons."

Viewers watch the premiere of "The Dark Knight Rises" at the Liberty Science Center IMAX theater in Jersey City, N.J., during the museum's first attempt at showcasing a full length Hollywood feature film. Director Christopher Nolan shot nearly half of his “Batman” finale using bulky IMAX cameras, whose 70mm frame is about 10 times the size of standard movie film. He also insisted that distributor Warner Bros. release it in at least 100 IMAX cinemas that can project it on film rather than in the digital format that has been gradually replacing celluloid.
